The media refers to investors engaged in independent critical research of representations disseminated by public companies as "short sellers." The media does not refer to the Chairman of the New York Stock Exchange or an analyst advising the purchase of a stock as a stock promoter. Investors with contrarian positions are far less numerous than stock promoters. They normally do not give public statements for attribution and do not buy advertising space in the financial press. Mutual funds, large companies with publicly traded stocks and bonds, and stockbrokers buy advertising space. It is therefore not surprising to find that the media must overcome large, and most times insurmountable, obstacles in order to relay to investors the issues and concerns covered in contrarian reports.
History has shown that investors and the overall economy would have been better served had the overall system been more open to contrarian views during the important economic period between 1996 and 2001. Readers should consider the above when reading any article about a public company or investment firm and certainly while reading any of the articles that contains treatment of contrarian opinions.
